Dr. Turki Al Rasheed Assumes Key Role as Advisor to the Environment and Sustainable Development Unit (ESDU) at American University of Beirut (AUB).

Dr. Turki Faisal Al Rasheed has been appointed as the esteemed Advisor to the Environment and Sustainable Development Unit (ESDU) within the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences (FAFS) at the prestigious American University of Beirut (AUB), Lebanon.

Established in 2001 as a cornerstone of FAFS AUB, ESDU serves as a dynamic interdisciplinary Research and Development (R&D) center dedicated to the advancement of sustainable agriculture and rural community development. With a steadfast commitment to collaboration with diverse donors, ESDU has solidified its reputation as a leading proponent of rural sustainable livelihoods, participatory resource management, and community-driven initiatives.

Bringing a wealth of experience in social agriculture, Dr. Al Rasheed, an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Arizona, Tucson, USA, is poised to make a significant impact in his new role as advisor. His primary focus is to leverage his expertise to benefit rural areas in Lebanon, fostering impactful partnerships between ESDU FAFS and donors from Gulf states. Dr. Al Rasheed is steadfast in his alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is set to collaborate closely with esteemed organizations such as the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN ESCWA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to promote sustainable development and bolster food security in the region.

In 2023, Dr. Al Rasheed contributed a paradigm-shifting second edition to his publication repertoire with the release of “Agricultural Development Strategies: The Saudi Experience,” widely available in leading bookstores and outlets.

ESDU has notably distinguished itself as a frontrunner in R&D initiatives throughout the MENA region, securing substantial grants and spearheading pivotal networks like KARIANET, focusing on knowledge management within rural areas. The unit proudly supports the renowned Rural Community Development MS program at FAFS and actively engages in broader community initiatives. ESDU’s Food Heritage Foundation has garnered acclaim for its unwavering dedication to preserving Lebanese culinary traditions and local food heritage.

With Dr. Al Rasheed’s appointment as advisor, ESDU is primed to harness his expertise and visionary approach, propelling the unit further toward its mission of sustainable environmental and community development.
